Dr Hernán Reyes, MD, of the ICRC’s Assistance Division, is a specialist on medical aspects of detention and has visited numerous detention centres around the world. Dr Reyes has been medical coordinator for the ICRC's detention activities since 1984. He trained as a gynaecologist and obstetrician and subsequently specialized in the medical aspects of detention. Dr. Reyes took an active part in establishing the ICRC's policy regarding hunger strikes in the prison environment.
