Gérard Niyungeko was born in Burundi in 1954. He holds a law degree from the University of Burundi, with a specialization in international law. He is a doctor of laws of the Brussels Free University and a graduate of the Hague Academy of International Law. He is currently Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Burundi, where he teaches public international law, the law of international organizations and constitutional law. In addition to his academic duties, he is Vice-President of the Burundi National Commission for UNESCO and heads the “Human Rights and Peace” division within that Commission. He is a member of the African Society for International and Comparative Law.
